چکیده

To gain information about the relative proportion of introduced anguillid eel species inhabiting Japa nese natural waters, 98 eels were collected and genetically identified — 46 from the Uono River, Niigata, Japan, during their downstream spawning migration, and 52 silver eels from the East China Sea. Species identification using RFLP analysis of the mitochondrial 16SrRNA domain suggested that the European eel, Anguilla anguilla, was more abundant (93.5%) than the Japanese eel, A. japonica, (4.3%) in the Uono River. One specimen was identified as American eel, A. rostrata, which is the first record of gen etic identification of this species in Japanese waters. In addition, a migrating European silver eel was identified among the sample of silver eels in the East China Sea. The genetic species identification of these specimens was in agreement with the morphological data. The present study suggests that import ed Atlantic cds develop normally to metamorphosis into the silver phase and then begin the oceanic spawning migration.

Magnetic sense in the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, as determined by conditioning and electrocardiography.

Magnetosensitivity of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, was examined by conditioning and electrocardiography. Marine eels, river eels and farmed eels were conditioned to an imposed magnetic field ranging from 12,663 nT to 192,473 nT parallel to the fish body, which was placed along the earth's west-east axis. Electrocardiograms were recorded with electrodes placed close to the fish body insi...

Viral diseases of wild and farmed European eel Anguilla anguilla with particular reference to the Netherlands.

Diseases are an important cause of losses and decreased production rates in freshwater eel farming, and have been suggested to play a contributory role in the worldwide decline in wild freshwater eel stocks. Three commonly detected pathogenic viruses of European eel Anguilla anguilla are the aquabirnavirus eel virus European (EVE), the rhabdovirus eel virus European X (EVEX), and the alloherpes...

Electroretinographic evaluation of spectral sensitivity in yellow and silver eels (Anguilla anguilla).

Although differences in visual pigments between developmental stages of the European eel are well known, the expected differences in spectral sensitivity have not been demonstrated at the electrophysiological level. In fact, one past electroretinographic study led to the conclusion that in eels there is no change in scotopic sensitivity, with increasing sexual maturity. In the present experimen...
